We run professionally customised safaris to suit our clients’ needs in all aspects, run a few selected safaris to “off the beaten track” destinations as well as safaris for organised groups.

Born in the heart of the enchanting landscapes of Kirinyaga District, Kenya, Joyce grew up in a world bathed in light and freedom, surrounded by the majestic silhouettes of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare ranges. Her childhood was marked by an insatiable thirst for adventure, an early love for nature, and a passion for the endless horizons she gazed at from the doorstep of her home.

Strong and determined, Joyce has always embraced life with the soul of a dreamer and the spirit of a warrior. Sometimes a tomboy, other times a free spirit, she firmly believed that nothing was out of reach, that every summit—whether literal or metaphorical—could be conquered. Even today, she continues to push the boundaries of possibility, embarking on hikes, running wild trails, or climbing toward the skies, always in search of new sensations.

The call of travel, that whisper heard by those who know how to listen, led Joyce into the hospitality industry in the early 1980s. She discovered in the world of tourism a passion that resonated with her deep love for exploration. Over nine years, she gathered experience and expertise, becoming a skilled manager, guide, and marketer. It was also during this time that she met the love of her life, the late Halewijn Scheuerman, an expert guide whose love for Africa mirrored her own.

Together, they created Hiking and Cycling Safaris Kenya, a tribute to their shared love of adventure and the freedom of spirit. Then, in 1993, they launched Jade Sea Journeys Safaris, a dream realized, expanding their vision beyond Kenya. Their desire to explore further took them to Ethiopia, where they founded Lumale Tours PLC and established an eco-camp on the banks of the Omo River. Here, nature and culture meet in perfect harmony, where travelers explore the river by boat from Lobolo Camp on Lake Turkana. Their quest for adventure next led them to Tanzania, where they created Pajota Safaris, offering cross-border journeys that remain as captivating as ever.

Widowed since 2009, Joyce has passionately carried on the dream she built with her husband. She has focused her efforts on delivering exceptional experiences, honing in on authentic and tailor-made tours through Jade Sea Journeys in Kenya and Pajota Safaris in Tanzania.

Today, Joyce embodies a romantic, free, and untamable spirit, blending the beauty of nature with the human adventure. Through her journeys, she offers her visitors not just East Africa, but also a slice of dream, freedom, and poetry.
